Innovative solutions
for removing plastic from our rivers

Design Thinking

On Friday the 20 of May 2016, participants were invited to visit the LEF Future Center, Rijkwaterstaat's inspiring innovation center, in Utrecht. Using proven Design Thinking methods, we helped the participants to analyze the problem of plastic waste in rivers. Together we generated ideas and selected the best solutions.

The Makathon

After the Design Thinking day, teams received assistance in preparing for the Makathon on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June in the 3D Makers Zone in Haarlem. At the Makathon, the teams build a prototype of their solution and prepared a presentation. At the end of the event a selection of winning solutions were chosen by the jury.

Innovation Board

The winners were encouraged to further develop their concept and prepare a pitch for the Plastic Free Rivers Innovation Board, consisting of potential customers and investors. On 1 July 7 solution made it to the final stage.

The winning teams will be encouraged to further develop their concept and pitch the prototype and business plan to the Plastic-Free Rivers Innovation Board, consisting of potential customers and investors. Each member of the Innovation Board will indicate whether he or she is willing to support the idea in the next phase, for example with funding, expertise, a pilot location, etc.
